Avocado
Oil on board, 12 × 12 cm

A small study of an everyday subject.

This little painting was all about exploring colour, value, and composition using something simple and familiar. I wanted to focus less on detail and more on how the shapes and colours sit together — the rich greens of the avocado against the warm background, and the contrast between the smooth flesh and the dark skin.

I had a lot of fun with this one, working mostly with palette knives and just a little brushwork. The goal was to really lean into the texture that thick oil paint allows, building up the surface so the paint itself becomes part of the subject.

Sometimes the simplest things make the best studies.
